Red Sunday

What comes to mind when you think of the color Red?  Apples, fire engines, roses, blood, Santa suits, tomatoes, ... (you add your own).

For Christians, red color  represents, among other things, the Holy Spirit, and it is the liturgical color for the holy day of Pentecost.  Pentecost is observed six weeks after Easter and celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit upon Jesus' followers and the birthday of the Christian Church.  The Bible records Pentecost this way: " On the day of Pentecost all the Lord's followers were in one place.  Suddenly there was a noise from heaven like the sound of a mighty wind!  It filled the house where they were meeting.  Then they saw what looked like fiery tongues moving in all directions, and a tongue came and settled on each person there.  The Holy Spirit took control of everyone, and they began speaking whatever languages the Spirit let them speak". (Acts 2:1-4 CEV)

The coming of the Holy Spirit was empowering, confusing, and life changing!  This year, we will celebrate Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit on June 4, and as part of our worship that day, everyone is encouraged to wear some article of red clothing - symbolic of the Holy Spirit's "fiery tongues."
